Artists are so relaxed in their own workshops so what a great place to tackle the most-asked-for topics!

Artists are so relaxed in their own studios, so what a great place to tackle the most-asked-for questions, skills and topics.

I’m running small workshops in studio settings, now - everyone’s tranquil and open to a range of solutions.

First up is The Gentle Art of Speaking Confidently about your Art and Studio Practice. Getting comfortable with public speaking, interviews and studio visitors.

It’s a morning tea-style presentation and Q and A at the picturesque Pollard Designs Studio* in the Perth Hills.

What will I cover?

Artists are smart and confident speakers, until someone…

  • Asks them to give a speech

  • Takes out a microphone to interview them

  • Invites them to open an exhibition or event

  • Wants them to explain their artwork.

Come, unwind and learn terrific tips to become a great conversationalist.

Time

10.00am for a 10.30am sharp start. We finish at 12 noon.

Fee

Four Drop Dead Absolute Essentials for Artists

Galleries are closing down left, right and centre. So, it’s never been more important to know exactly what’s required to be represented by the ones still delivering dynamic support.

Galleries are closing down left, right and centre. So, it’s never been more important to know exactly what’s required to be represented by the ones still delivering dynamic support.

Give yourself a chance. Learn how to be ready to meet a gallery director or art centre manager.(I’ll tell you exactly what galleries have been telling me).

Don’t want gallery  representation - intending to go solo, hire a space and do it yourself? Come and learn really helpful hints.

Join me at Four Drop Dead Absolute Essentials for Artists. (What gallerists, funders, fans and your peers totally need) during the Victoria Park Centre for the Arts’ Art Season program.

What you’ll receive
In two action and information packed hours we’ll work through and exchange solutions on the following vital steps

  1. Practice and Priorities. How to make beautiful art while juggling life’s irritating responsibilities.

  2. making₁ + maRkETing₂ + mENTORing₃. The formula for success.

  3. Fake it till you make it! Be your own agent – behave like a gallerist, curator and arts manager (so you’ve got a better chance of being selected).

  4. Amazing! I saw your art at... Galleries promote and sell, but chances are you’ll probably need other outlets, too. Where, when and why to show your work.

  5. Peer discussions – engage with other artists and makers and ask for feedback

  6. Take home practical, relevant working documents that you’ll refer to long after the workshop has finished

  7. Morning tea provided

Public Art Ache - OMG those applications and interviews

No-one wins when the best public art ideas are abandoned – you, the client and most of all, the public.

No-one wins when the best public art ideas are abandoned – you, the client and most of all, the public.

I’ve worked with emerging and experienced public artists and seen winning proposals submitted to the Western Australian Government’s Percent for Art Scheme and private clients.

Sadly, I’ve also seen too many fantastic ideas rejected because they were presented in depressingly poor applications - or ruined in nervy, disorganised interview presentations.

Public Art Ache - OMG those applications and interviews is a professional development workshop offering genuine advice on writing powerful public art proposals and delivering a memorable and convincing interview.

Your idea might be the best and most exciting.

But, if you fail to impress the Selection Committee (the client, the architect and sometimes another two or three interested parties) – it’s over.

Give yourself a chance. Learn how to write powerful public art proposals and arrive prepared and confident when you’re shortlisted for the panel interview.

What you’ll receive

  1. Find out how successful and experienced public artists represent themselves when they respond to the Expression of Interest, Invitation and advertisement.

  2. Get the lowdown on how to be a great interviewee, and ways to impress the Selection Panel.

  3. Learn what to look for in the project brief, and how to highlight relevant details about your arts accomplishments.

  4. What you must ask the art coordinator or curator before you submit your proposal.

  5. Understand all those terms like Concept Design Submission and Indicative Project Timetable.

  6. Engage in peer discussions and ask for feedback.

  7. Hear where practitioners purchase their insurance policies - you'll need good, reliable coverage.

  8. Take home practical, relevant working documents that you'll refer to long after the workshop has finished.

  9. Yummy morning and afternoon tea, and lunch provided.

This workshop is about the first step – getting an interview and then being impressive in the interview. It does not cover what happens in the Design Development and subsequent Stages.

Your Art’s Great So Why Are You Hiding It? Getting confident with Social Media, Journalists and the Press.

Every wondered why other artists are featured in the media? Are you confident with Social Media, Journalists and the Press?

Every wondered why other artists are featured in the media? Are you confident with Social Media, Journalists and the Press?

I wish I could find someone to promote me so I could just make art is a pretty common entreaty.  I hear it almost daily.

It’s tough out there.

Hard-working visual artists are adjusting to big changes like galleries closing, burgeoning social media and an explosion of new demands to be ‘out-there’ and visible.

Open studios, open homes, pop-up exhibitions and shops, art awards are great – if you’ve convinced your audience to leave home and attend your event.

This workshop will turn things around.

Your Art’s Great So Why Are You Hiding It? Getting confident with Social Media, Journalists and the Press is presented by arts journalist, Paula Silbert and leading Arts Marketeer, Alison Welburn.

In just one day, you’ll receive

  1. Tried and tested ways to receive thousands of dollars of free media.

  2. Simple ways to get the best out of Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and LinkedIn.

  3. Essential ingredients for your next Media Release.

  4. What you must (and mustn’t) say to journalists.

  5. A Step-by-step Media Release check-list.

  6. Easy ways to identify the media that’s good for you, your studio and your event

  7. Guided practice and investigation on your device – or (if you don’t have one) learning and getting confident while closely watching other participants practice on theirs.

  8. It’s enjoyable, no-stress learning.

  9. Yummy morning and afternoon tea, and lunch provided.

And don’t worry if you don’t have a device or feel downright terrified. It’s no-stress learning - everything will be explained in simple terms.

You can watch and ask those more experienced as they try our suggestions – it really works.
