Cassi-Jo Davis’ art narrates female wisdom and fierce survival. A kind of renaissance of women’s wisdom and moral elegance.
In majestic garments and wall-pieces, she unpicks biases from colonial ‘history’ to contemporary folklore. Messages of survivor strength, broken hearts, domestic violence, and depression. Societal myths and religious inequities disentangled.
Her mind-blowing dresses, corsets and wall pieces unravel prejudices and perceptions.
Unwanted, unsaleable old polyester wedding dresses are transformed and reworked with beautiful textile remnants, recycled millinery flowers, dyed lace, paint and freehand embroidery.
She speaks of environmental degradation to domestic violence.

Her repurposed gowns are declarations against fast fashion and mass pollution. (Did you know single-use wedding gowns add tonnes of polyester and non-biodegradable materials to landfill? Each one takes between 20 and 200 years to decompose).
Collecting and repurposing antique textiles and lace provides the textured narrative.
‘When I find these elements (the textiles and lace), I want to know who owned them. In old houses, I wonder - who looked out this window? What were their hopes and dreams?’
‘The River Lea’ song by Adele gave rise to Cassi Jo’s gown, ‘The River’.

“When I was a child, I grew up by the River Lea. There was something in the water.
Now that something's in me. Oh I can't go back, but the reeds are growing out of my fingertips.”
(There’s something very spiritual about the Blackwood River. Bridgetown (in WA) was a place of healing with indigenous birthing and healing rocks).

Titles like The Ships Brought the Men, What the Trees Said, and Aquifer are showcased on runways, catwalks and exhibition spaces.
